FAQs
Will you offer this again next year?
I don’t know! This is a grand experiment!! The only year I know I for certain I am offering Sacred Creative Adventure Retreat in South Africa is 2023.
Is this right for me?
If you are feeling your heart tugged by this invitation, don’t you owe it to yourself to at least explore that feeling?
Before you let your mind start listing all the “Yeah, buts…,” all the logical reasons this is not the year (I can’t go before my children, the timing isn’t perfect, I should wait til my husband retires…) Stop for a moment and feel into your heart. Take five slow deep breaths, breathing into your heart, and ask yourself - Is this for me? Is it really for me? See what you feel in your body in response to that question. Then ask yourself: What will my life be like next year if I don’t do this?
How can I connect with you to learn more about the retreat?
If you’d like help with the tuning-in process, schedule a call! I’d love to help you get clear on what you want your expansive life to look like going forward - no strings attached! (Besides, Africa is one of my favorite things to talk about anyway!!)
Is it safe in South Africa?
I have personally been to the KwaZulu-Natal region in South Africa five times and I have never felt unsafe. Heading north from Durban airport, the area becomes increasingly rural. Whether I was at the gas station convenience store or at the local craft market, the people were unfailingly friendly and kind. Once we pick you up at the airport, you will be accompanied the entire eight days. Private transfers will take you to the oceanside Sala House and from there to Phinda Private Game Reserve and back to the airport.
“Why is it you can never hope to describe the emotion Africa creates? You are lifted. Out of whatever pit, unbound from whatever tie, released from whatever fear. You are lifted and you see it all from above.”
South Africa is not without poverty and crime. But basic precautions suitable for travelers anywhere have served me well - don’t wear flashy jewelry, don’t wave your expensive iPhone around, don’t leave your bag unattended on a car seat… I’ve spent time and have friends in Johannesburg and have personally loved it there, especially when the purple Jacaranda trees are in bloom. But if you are going to be on your own traveling in a big city, be aware of your surroundings. Learn what parts of town are safe and which are best avoid. (That’s true here in the States too!)
What about Covid?
At this writing, there are no Covid-related restrictions to entering South Africa. Travelers do not need to produce vaccination certificates or recent negative PCR tests. The wearing of face masks is no longer required.
If international travel is curtailed again and the trip becomes impossible, both venues have policies that allow us to reschedule.
The private nature of this retreat means that we will not be in very many public places. From the moment you land in Durban, all transportation and accommodation is private. Both Homestead Lodge at Phinda and Sala House have elevated cleaning and health screening requirements in place.
That said, travel, especially by air, does incur inherent exposure to other humans, which is always a risk. By deciding to travel, you are agreeing to assume responsibility for that risk. Personal contingencies should be addressed with travel insurance.
Would I need to get malaria shots?
KwaZulu-Natal on the northeastern coast of South Africa is a malaria free zone. Always check with your own health practitioner about keeping immunizations up to date, but no special malaria preventative is required.
What should I bring?
I’ll provide a suggested packing list on sign up, mostly involving layers of subdued-colored clothing, good walking shoes and a hat. But feel free to travel light. Housekeeping service includes daily clothes laundering. Put your outfit in the basket in the morning, by evening your clothes will magically reappear clean and folded.
What is the weather like?
In October in KwaZulu-Natal the average high is 80F and the average low 62F, with 9 days of rain per month.
If I’ve gone all that way, what if I want to explore more of South Africa or the continent?
Great! My friends Domi and Brett Roux at Our African Footprints Travel, who you will be coordinating with to arrange domestic transport, will be happy to help. They can book all your plans and will gladly make suggestions based on your interests. If you need someone to help arrange your air flight to South Africa, they know someone who can help with that too!
Is a payment plan available?
Absolutely! Early bird pricing is in effect until Feb 29 and a monthly payment plan is available. (Bonuses offered if you’d prefer to pay in full now!)
How far will we be from the animals?
This varies of course - there are reserve requirements, and it’s in part up to the animals themselves! But if your expectations are anything like mine were, the answer is - closer than you think! Sometimes animals are in the distance (and some - like elephants - we want to keep our distance from!) But I’ve also regularly watched lions lounging within 10-30 feet of the safari vehicle. We even had a hyena walk up within three feet and sniff my husband once! (I’ve got it on video, I swear!)
Where did all these photos come from?!
The photos are mine! I took all the pictures you see on this website over the course of five separate trips to Phinda Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. :) Photography is a personal passion, and there’s really no place better for it than on safari. You don’t need a super duper, ultra telephoto lens here either. Like I said, many of the encounters will be close!
